Sampur Dheri Swabi: Tracing the Kushan Legacy

The Sampur Dheri Archaeological site is recently uncovered in the village of Baja in Swabi district. It is comprised of a Main Stupa, Votive Stupa, and a Monastery. Coins discovered at this location trace the history of Sampur Dheri back to the reign of the great Kushan King Haviskha during the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

Located just a few yards away from the road on a small hill, this archaeological site features the remnants of a Buddhist monastery. Despite its significance as an important Gandhara site, it is in a deteriorating state, with crops even being cultivated within its boundaries. Protection, further excavation, and restoration are imperative for its preservation.

For enthusiasts of Buddhist and Indo-Pak history, a visit to Sampur Dheri is recommended. While the site is protected under the Antiquities Act of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urgent attention from the Archaeological department is required to ensure its safeguarding and restoration.
