Remains of Fort cum Stable of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Gujranwala

The Sukerchakia Misl was one of 12 Sikh Misls in Punjab during the 18th century, based in Gujranwala districts in Lehnda Punjab (modern-day Pakistan) between (1752–1801). Sardar Charat Singh of Sandhawalia, the grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founded Sukerchakia Misl. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was Sukerchakia's last Misldar (commander of the Misl) who united all the Misls later and established an independent Sikh Empire in 1801.
Sardar Charat Singh was Chaudhary Naudh Singh's eldest son, the father of Maha Singh, and the grandfather of Ranjit Singh. In 1752, Charat Singh established the Sukerchakia Misl, with its headquarters in Gujranwala. He distinguished himself in campaigns against Ahmad Shah Abdali at a young age and split from the Singhpuria Misl to found The Sukerchakia Misl in Gujranwala. He married Sardarni Desan Kaur, the daughter of an older but still powerful sardar, Sardar Amir Singh of Gujranwala, and relocated his headquarters there. He extended his rule to Rohtas, Chakwal, Pind Dadan Khan, which stood in the Pothohar Region of Northern Punjab, and seized control of Wazirabad. Sardar Charat Singh bolstered his position through matrimonial alliances.
Sardar Maha Singh Sukerchakia became the second misldar of Sukarchakia after Charat Singh died in 1774. Misl's territory was also expanded further. This Fort cum stable in Gujranwala was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1799 A.D to protect its citizens from rivals and invaders. After the Mughals fell, Maharaja Ranjit Singh united all the misls and established a powerful kingdom in Punjab.
The structure is now partly used by Gujranwala Police as Mall Khana which is surrounded by old Judicarory (Kachehri). It is in dilapidated state and in dire need of preservation.
