Ganish is the oldest and first settlement on the ancient Silk road in the Hunza valley. It consists of ancient watch towers, traditional mosques, religious centers and a pool. The village is located at a distance of about 90 kms from Gilgit. According to locals, the meaning of the word "Ganish" is derived from the Broshiski word "Ganeih" which means gold. Ganish has been a major transit point for travelers and traders on the ancient Silk road. Due to its location on the main highway, the town has always been under attack by looters and plundrers. Ganish was awarded the Asia-Pacific Award for preservation of cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2002 and 2009.
